Who We Are

What is Counselling?

Counselling deals with a person’s well-being, which includes:

  • Personal knowledge and growth
  • Family life
  • Career
  • Spirituality

Counselling is about providing an opportunity for a person to work towards a more satisfying and resourceful way of living.

Counselling happens when a counsellor skilfully and ethically works with a person, in a therapeutic relationship; for the purpose of personal growth and healing, and to facilitate the development of a person’s own resources.

My aim for counselling

To work with a person, in a way that is respectful of his/her values, beliefs, personal resources and capacity for self-determination

To provide a safe space for persons to speak about and explore their thoughts, emotions and ways of behaving

To assist persons with :

  • § developing knowledge and acceptance of self
  • § working through times of inner conflict
  • § improving relationships with others
  • § addressing and resolving specific problems
  • § making decisions
  • § coping with crisis

I treat a number of mental health disorders, and provide a neutral ground to individuals, families, and couples.

My Practice and personal views

I value persons as human beings, each with individual skills, talents, beliefs, ways of thinking and patterns of behaving. In counselling, I respect and support each person as they interact with the world from a position of awareness and purpose.

Ethics & Confidentiality

I work according to the code of ethics of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors* and the New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association**.

Confidentiality: Conversations and the notes I take during counselling sessions are kept confidential. I will only share information with another person, if my client gives permission for me to do so. When counselling a child, I meet with parent/s / whanau at various stages in the process to give an outline of progress, but do not share information which the child has asked to be kept confidential.

Exceptions to confidentiality: If the safety of my client or any other person is at risk of serious harm, I inform my client first (where possible) before I disclose information. As part of my professional practice, I am also required to engage in supervision with another experienced counsellor. This means that I discuss my client work, with my supervisor.
